Living a sustainable life: How to avoid plastic waste

Living a plastic free life - here is what you can do

Plastic waste everywhere: The blessing has become a curse

Depressing pictures and news in the media keep on flooding in: the tons of garbage in the Pacific Ocean, as big as Central Europe. Dead animals with nothing but plastic in their stomachs. Beaches of distant and uninhabited islands, littered with plastic waste from thousands of kilometres away in industrialised countries. Plastic-contaminated soil and inland waterways, 23 times as polluted as the sea. Microplastics, blowing up to the highest peaks of the Himalayas and Antarctica. And which slowly but surely accumulates in the human body through cosmetics, clothing and food.

Dangerous disposal in structurally weak regions

A study by the Fraunhofer Institute in 2018 assumes that worldwide every year almost 30 million tons of plastic are improperly disposed of on land, 11 million tons end up in the sea and 49 million tons are incinerated openly, i.e. improperly and unfiltered. Figures that make you dizzy. According to the United Nations (UN), about 2 billion people do not have access to proper waste disposal, the waste ends up on the streets, in rivers, lakes or seas or is incinerated openly.

Too little recycling in structurally strong regions

But even rich countries with functioning disposal systems, such as Germany, recycle only just under 16% of their plastic waste. And what cannot be recycled or disposed of is exported. Germany is the third largest exporter of plastic waste to Asia - after the USA and Japan. According to the motto: Out of sight, out of mind. An end to the worldwide plastic waste is not in sight for decades. If the rudder is not turned hard, it will multiply by 2040, according to researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute.

The fight against plastic waste: commitment at all levels

However, environmentalists and researchers are only cautiously optimistic about regulations and countermeasures. They agree that avoiding plastic waste is the most effective weapon in the fight against global pollution. And you can do that:

Avoid plastic waste: You can do it!

However, environmentalists and researchers are only cautiously optimistic about regulations and countermeasures. They agree that avoiding plastic waste is the most effective weapon in the fight against global pollution.

And this is what you can do:

  • Zero Waste: Avoid waste where you can! This is especially true for plastic and other disposable products. Use returnable cups, bags and packaging! Buy from companies and delivery services that operate without harmful packaging.

  • Waste separation: continue to separate your waste carefully! Contact your local waste management company if you have questions.

  • Certified natural products: Look for certified natural products in clothing, cosmetics and furnishings that are produced in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

  • Recycling and Upcycling: Keep an eye out for sustainably recycled clothing and furniture!

Living a plastic free life is not that hard - things you can do

Awareness and commitment

It is important that you are aware of the problem and that you continue to inform yourself and get involved in one of the large environmental organisations such as Greenpeace or the worldwide movement BreakFreeFromPlastic. You will also find regional initiatives that are happy about donations or cooperation.

Here at D3CO biosofa, we're proud to produce only plastic-free furniture! Eco-friendly and sustainable to make sure we don't pollute or harm the environment, but also prevent harmful materials and toxic chemicals to pose a hazard for our own health in our homes.
